Shiatsu TherapyShiatsu Therapy evolved from an ancient form of Japanese massage called, Anma. The word 'Shiatsu' means finger pressure in Japanese. Shiatsu Therapy was developed in the early part of the 20th century combining the newer Western medical knowledge of anatomy & physiology with the ancient philosophy & diagnostic methods used in Oriental Medicine. So as the client you get the best of both worlds! Shiatsu Therapy is based on your body's natural energy flow. This energy is referred to as 'ki' in Japanese (or 'qi' in Chinese, both are pronounced 'chi') and is mapped according to the meridian system as used in Oriental Medicine. Different forms of diagnosis to find areas of excess (Jitsu) or deficiency (Kyo) include: palpation, tongue analysis, pulse (in an Oriental Medicine sense), and client medical history. Everyone has areas of deficiency & excess, the role of your Shiatsu Therapist is to bring balance to these areas through treatment combined with corrective stretching or strengthening exercises, diet or herbal medicine recommendations. If diagnosis shows an excess such as hyperactivity, the aim is to disperse this energy and calm your bodymind©. If diagnosis shows areas of deficiency ie lacking in energy, pale complexion etc then the aim is to tonify your 'ki' (pronounced 'chi') to bring your systems back into balance & increase your vitality.
Your Shiatsu Therapist may apply pressure to different points of your body using their fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows or feet to activate your body's ki or energy movement. Your treatment may also incorporate cupping, moxibustion, or magnet therapy. Magnets are placed on acupressure points and may be worn for several days post-treatment to increase the effects & benefits for you. Each treatment is designed to your specific needs. You wear loose, comfortable clothing as treatment often involves flowing stretches and gentle rotation of limbs usually on a soft futon on the floor, but may be given in a sitting position or on a massage table.
