History of NutritionWe have to eat to live and from very early times it has been understood there is a correlation between the quality of what we eat and how we feel. Food gives strength, it wards off illness and in many cultures food is interconnected with religious ceremonies and beliefs. From as early as 475BC, it was realised that food contained nutrients - compounds that were absorbed and used by our body. In the age of Hippocrates, food was used in the treatment of wounds & illness, with Hippocrates famously stating 'let food be your medicine and medicine be your food'. The modern study of nutrition began in 1747, when James Lind, a British Navy doctor, realised that lime juice (which contained Vitamin C) could be used to prevent scurvy and conducted the first scientific nutrition experiment. In the 1770s Antoine Lavoisier discovered the process by which food is metabolised and since then, as science has become more sophisticated, we have learnt more and more about how foods affect the human body.
