MoxibustionMoxibustion is an ancient form of treatment, older than acupuncture, which treats & prevents disease by applying heat to points found throughout the body. It is one of the healing modalities used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is based on the meridian system, as is acupuncture. Meridians are channels of energy movement in the body. If the flow of energy or 'qi' (pronounced & sometimes written as 'chi') becomes blocked or depleted then the body loses harmony and illness and disease result. Moxibustion uses moxa, which is ground Mugwort (Artemesia Vulgaris) leaves, applied to an acupuncture point. This creates a warm, comfortable and alleviating sensation in which the heat is conducted into the muscles to affect the meridians where it is most required by the body. It stimulates the channel pathway underneath the acupuncture point, activating the body's natural energy to clear blockages & rebalance the body's systems.
Moxibustion produces a discrete aroma, which people find calming. If you are sensitive to smoke, smokeless moxa is used. The essential oil contained in the mugwort is also known to have a major effect, as a mode of aromatherapy & medicinal incense. During moxibustion, the practitioner allows the heat to accumulate. When the body's threshold is attained, production of anti-inflammatory compounds, white & red blood cells, and endorphins are induced. Moxibustion can take between 7-20 minutes and is usually used as part of a treatment session involving other Traditional Chinese Medicine modalities (acupuncture with or without needles, acupressure or tui na massage, chinese herb consultation, cupping, or as part of a Shiatsu Therapies treatment).
